Once used as a royal retreat, Petriolo has been mindfully restored
in the 1970’s to maintain its historic
importance that has been appreciated for hundreds of years. The
authentic thermal baths date back to 1230 and
still today remain the only fortified spas from which you are able
to admire the walls and tower of the
Republic of Siena.
Famous for its curative sulphuric properties,
this site was frequented by many illustrious figures of their times,
from members of the
Medici family to bishops and cardinals. It was the preferred
retreat of Pope Pius II during his reign in the late 1400’s. In 1907, Petriolo was officially depicted on the
exclusive list of mineral waters in Italy by
the Ministry of Internal Affairs and remains highly noted with great
appeal. Rich with noble history and
captivating stories, the ancient culture of the area is still alive
today with the recent discovery of a Roman
tomb in the vicinity of the property.
