      Villa Principe Leopoldo, a five star luxury hotel , located at the very top of the ’Collina d'Oro‘,  Lugano's Golden Hill , an elegant, sun-kissed residential area commanding breathtaking views of the mountains and the gulf of Lake Lugano. The Villa was built for  Federico Leopoldo, a cavalry general, who was a descendant of the Hohenzollerns, a great German dynasty that ascended, in 1701, to the throne of the Prussian Kingdom and from 1871, to the German empire.
       The villa, which was inhabited by Prince Federico Leopoldo until his death (1931), had been built at the end of the 19th century as the family’s summer residence. This is luxury without overwhelming formality.           The complex includes the Residence Principe Leopoldo a charming manor across the street, which offers elegantly designed and furnished suites.        A hotel only since 1985, the original building has been preserved, with parquet floors, heavy chandeliers and trompe-l'oeil paintings. The hillside under the terrace was dug away to build the bedrooms. All are junior suites, with picture windows, walk-in closets, electronic shutters, huge mirrors and furnishings of green or pink with gold creating a rich but uncluttered look. Dramatic was the verdict on the lemon-print fabric and black rattan chairs of the breakfast-room, which looks out on the fan-shaped swimming-pool. Everywhere are portraits of nobility, busts of Roman emperors and English sporting prints. The restaurant serves imaginative Italian dishes as well as caviar and lobster. This is luxury without overwhelming formality.  KISO, a luxurous and exclusive spa, which they call the 'Jewel of the hotel'.  
     Accomodations at the villa are large deluxe rooms or junior suites between 45 and 60 m² each, either facing the garden or the lake.  The spacious guestrooms and suites open to balconies with views of the lake, mountains, city, and or gardens. 42-inch LCD TVs come with premium channels and pay movies. Beds are layered with luxury linens and down duvets. Separate sitting areas include sofas. Other amenities include minibars, in-room electronic safes, and complimentary wireless Internet access. Marble bathrooms offer bathrobes, slippers, and designer toiletries.
    The Residence Principe Leopoldo also  offers very spacious luxurious rooms with over 42 m² each, including a comfortable living area, a bathroom with vanity , and a terrace or patio.
     The Principe Leopoldo Restaurant, is a very refined environment with tapestry walls, very comfortable chairs, lovely linens, marble floors and unobstrusive lighting. Any establishment named "Hotel of the Year" by GaultMillau must also have a "sparkling" cuisine. The Limonaia restaurant offers a winter-garden setting with a seasonal terrace overlooking the lake and mountains. A lounge hosts live music every evening. A wine cellar offers more than 500 labels.
